8.ta Project Hulk Internet Special
8ta announced the launch of a 10GB data bundle at R199 per month and 10GB + 10GB data special at R299 per month
8ta launched two data products, a 10GB data bundle priced at R199 per month and a 10GB + 10GB Midnight Surfer service priced at R299 per month. Both services are available on 24 month contracts.
8ta’s 10GB + 10GB service offers subscribers 10GB of data per month, with another 10GB of data from 00:00 to 05:00.
8ta’s new pricing is significantly more aggressive than Vodacom, Cell C and MTN’s 2GB promotions priced at R149 per month. It also undercuts Cell C’s 5GB per month data offering priced at R299 per month on contract.
8ta’s new promotion is jokingly referred to as the ‘Project Hulk’ special because of the aggressive pricing.
The following table provides an overview of the most prominent mobile broadband promotions available today.
| Mobile Data Contracts | |||||
| Standard data | After hours data | Price | Basic Cost/MB | Lowest Cost/MB | |
| 8ta 10GB + 10GB | 10GB | 10GB | R299 | R0.019 | R0.014 |

| MTN 2GB (modem inc) | 2GB | – | R149 | R0.073 | R0.073 |
The new 8ta promotion is a data-only special where subscribers have the option of either using their own modem or purchasing a modem from 8ta. 8ta’s price for a 7.2Mbps modem is R349 while a 21Mbps costs R699.
Out of bundle data is priced at 30c per MB.
Users should note that this offer is only available on the 8ta network, and not on MTN roaming.
The promotion kicks off on Sunday, 26 June 2011, and will only be available for a limited period.

Google ‘launches’ Gmail Motion Beta (for dumb people)
Of all the days in the year, Google chooses today to introduce a highly-suspect new service: Gmail Motion Beta.
The mouse and keyboard are entirely “outdated technologies,” says Google. They require us to sit at a desk, scrunched up in to balls of tension that, when held long enough, can literally drain a person’s will to live. This unnatural contortion is especially problematic when sending emails with the embarrassingly-antiquated type-and-click functionality that has hardened our souls into lumps of coal from years of over-use.
Luckily for us all, Google announced today a much-needed remedy: Gmail Motion Beta.
Taking a cue from Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect, Gmail Motion allows users to compose emails with the use of gesture-based controls. The new development uses your computer’s camera and a “spacial tracking algorithm” to turn “physical movement into actionable commands,” says Gmail product manager Paul McDonald in a new video about the service.
The next part may take some a bit of time to get comfortable with, especially while in a crowded office setting. But, as Google says, it’s totally worth it.
Rather than simply click on an email’s subject line to open the message, for example, Gmail Motion enables users to simply make the movement like opening an envelope. That makes sense, right? Or, to reply to a message, just point backwards with your thumb. Use two hands to “reply all.” Pretend to lick a stamp and place it on an envelope to send. The list goes on.
Actually, it doesn’t.
As you certainly already guessed, Gmail Motion is one of Google’s many April Fool’s Day pranks this year, and doesn’t actually exist. (But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t attempt to convince your gullible co-workers to give it a try.)
Other Google pranks out today include the “Voice-alyzer,” which claims to prevent Google Voice users from making regrettable late-night drunk-calls; and “Autocompleter,” a fake job at Google that involves monitoring live searches and filling in users’ search suggestions by hand.
Of course, YouTube didn’t miss out on the April 1 action. When accessing videos on YouTube.com, a new “1911? feature button appears on the right side of the video control bar. When pressed, it turns any video into a old-timey silent film complete with film scratches and silly music.
April Fool’s Day pranks abound in the tech world today. The good folks of Tech Crunch have released the most comprehensive list of all the tricks, spoofs and jokes online. So unless you want to look like an idiot at least once today (and it’s totally OK with the rest of us if you do), we recommend you give that one a solid once-over.

DSTV Mobile adds two more channels
CNNi, E!Entertainment and Sony Max will join the existing nine DStv channels that have been available as part of the introductory phase.
“The content on DStv Mobile is based on extensive research and consumers have been encouragingly vocal in terms of what they want to watch on a mobile device. From our observations and analysis of feedback, our sports channels have proved to be very popular but we have seen strong demand for more general entertainment which we hope to address via these new channels” said Aletta Alberts, head of content at DStv Mobile.
From the first week of April 2011, the available channels will be as follows: eNews, CNNi, Channel O, E! Entertainment, Sony Max, Africa Magic, Cartoon Network, Trace Urban, SuperSport 1, 2 and 3 and SuperSport Blitz.
“The introduction of digital mobile TV to South Africa has been a tremendous milestone and since November 2010, we have given consumers the opportunity to experience the service in order to encourage trial and feedback. A key driver of mobile television is the availability of suitable content for on-the-go consumption and we believe our improved bouquet is a step forward in this regar,” commented Mark Rayner, GM of DStv Mobile South Africa.
With the introductory phase coming to an end, new subscription charges for accessing the DStv Mobile bouquet will commence in the first week of April 2011.
DStv Mobile accessed through the Drifta mobile decoder will cost R36 monthly. DStv Mobile offered via DVB-H phones is also available for R9 per week as an alternative to the R36 monthly option.
DStv Premium subscribers will receive DStv Mobile on both Drifta and DVB-H handsets at no extra cost.
DStv Compact subscribers who subscribe to DStv Mobile via the Drifta before 31 March 2011 will get DStv Mobile at no extra cost until 31 March 2012.

ANCYL Website Hacked
ANCYL website states that “Julius Malema to Step Down as Youth League President”
The news article, posted by the “{Blah Blah} Protest group” in the form of a letter by ANCYL president Julius Malema, stated that “After much thought I Julius Malema have decided to step down as ANC Youth league President”.
The reasons, the article stated, included that Malema “brought my party the ANC in to disrepute, disrespected my elders and have made a fool out of myself, promote Nationalization even though I have no concept of how it works or its backlash to the economy.”
The article continued saying that “I promote my own agenda over my country’s and parties, I promote the singing of racist songs to promote violence and un-rest in the country and I do not consider youth issues”.
In response to questions about the alleged hacking of the website, youth league spokeswoman Magdelene Moonsamy said: “There is nothing that we are aware of at this point and there is nothing on our website. We do not have time for things like this.”
Unwembi, the company which designed, developed and maintain the ANCYL website, said that they were aware of the problem and looked into it. At the time they could not confirm that the website was hacked.
